Aussie muscle cars fetched good prices – but nowhere near the $600,000-plus recently paid for a GTHO Phase III Falcon – at last night’s Shannons Autumn Sydney auction.

The original-condition 1973 LJ Torana GTR XU-1 (pictured) that was expected to set a benchmark price for XU-1s in the wake of the record price paid for the Phase III brought $75,000. The car was Juniper Green metallic with Doeskin and Chestnut upholstery.

A Glacier White 1973 Torana L34 sedan modified to A9X spec and fitted with a T5 five-speed gearbox (pictured) brought $60,000, and a low-mileage GT Silver XT GT Ford Falcon – believed to be the second example built in March 1968 – sold for $40,000.

The potential Aussie muscle stand-out car for the night – an Inca Gold 1969 Monaro GTS 327 in good condition – was passed in for just under $120,000. However, Shannons says the car should sell after the auction.

In front of more than 500 people at Shannons’ St Leonards showroom, a red 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT coupe (pictured) brought the $220,000 highest price of the auction. Restored in the 1990s and said to be one of the best Dinos in the country, the car came with the NSW number plate “DIN 246”.

The left hand drive Grabber Blue 1970 Boss Mustang 302 Fastback with all matching numbers – one of just 737 built with the W-code Drag Pack option – was another big-ticket item, selling for $126,000.

Numberplates did well, too, with the “right to display” the black and white NSW plate 7117 selling for $50,000, while 78047 brought $19,500.

Other notable auction results included a fully-restored 1929 Packard 626 “Five Window” Coupe (pictured) sold for $36,000; a 1930 Austin Seven with an original Australian-made Meteor body sold for $27,000, almost double its pre-auction estimate, while a red 1930 Model A Ford Roadster made $18,000.

Among more recent classics, a recently-restored white-over-black 1965 Austin Healey 3000 MkIII BJ8 brought $72,000; a red 1965 left-hand-drive Ford Mustang Convertible sold for $54,500, a black 1962 MGA Mk I convertible with red interior and chrome wire wheels made $27,000 and a previously-restored black 1950 48-215 (FX) Holden sold for $19,000 after strong bidding.

Bargains included a 1973 Jensen Healey Mk I Convertible in good condition sold for $6100; a well-optioned 1973 Holden Premier Anniversary model sold for $5000 and a one-owner 1978 Leyland Mini Moke Californian with 67,800km on the clock sold for $5750.

Vintage and Classic motorcycles were also popular with buyers, with a 2002 Harley Fat Boy bringing $25,500 and a 1938 AJS Silver Streak getting $17,000.
